Feathered Star (Ultimate Quilt Series)

Every quilter has a list of the "Ultimate Quilts" they'd like to make.  If the Feathered Star is on your list, join us at the Quilter's Trunk as we explore the different techniques and skills needed to create this traditional design.  The class project is included in the book "All Star Quilts" by Eleanor Burns of Quilt in a Day, but if you have a different pattern in your collection, you can use it for your project.

Finished size of project: 38" x 38"

Skill level: Intermediate

In class you will learn the following techniques: Fabric selection; Rotary Cutting; Machine Piecing strips and Half Square Triangles; Accuracy in cutting, sewing and pressing; Measuring for Borders.

Please bring to class:

Required Pattern:  All Star Quilts by Eleanor Burns, Quilt in a Day

  • Page 101 (of above text) Fabric requirements
  • Sewing Thread that blends with fabric (gray or tan cotton)
  • Rotary Cutting tools – mat (18” x 24” if possible), rotary cutter with a sharp blade, long ruler (at least 4 inches wide by 22 inches long), 6 ½” Triangle Square-Up ruler (optional), 12 ½” Square-Up ruler (optional).
  • Sewing machine with ¼” seam guide (remember your foot pedal, power cord and bobbins!)
  • Basic sewing supplies – seam ripper, marking pencils, thread snips, straight pins, etc.
  • Design wall – a flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth is a good temporary, portable substitute.  Other ideas – quilt batting, flannel sheet, dressmaker’s cardboard, foam-core display panels, something to pin your blocks to while designing your quilt.

Ironing stations are provided in the classroom for students to share.
