Forty Fabulous Years from Eleanor Burns Part 3

We’re going to be expanding our block building skills one-by-one… but so much fun!  Let’s prepare to do two blocks for this class session.  We will relax and take our time enjoying the process and if we only get one block done then we will be more prepared for the next one!

Following the textbook's sequence, we'll play with Independence Square.  We'll use simple strip piecing to create three different types of units including the classic nine-patch.

If time permits, we’ll proceed with the Road to Paradise block.  Another nine-patch layout, this cutie includes the half-triangle-square unit that we practiced with our Silent Star block, and two new units – the square-in-a-square, and the triangle-in-a-square.  Each will be made with the easy, efficient techniques that Eleanor has perfected.

Please bring to class:

  • Your Forty Fabulous Years textbook
  • Your selected fabrics for your blocks
  • Your sewing machine - remember your power cord, foot petal, and 1/4" foot
  • Your small cutting mat and rotary cutter (large ones will be available in the classroom for your use)
  • Your basic machine sewing tools and supplies including thread, bobbins, seam ripper (you know, just in case someone else needs to borrow one), thread snips, etc.
  • 6" x 12", 4" x 14" or similar sized acrylic ruler that use can easily maneuver to mark and cut your smaller fabric pieces
  • 4 ½” fussy cut or square up ruler and/or a 6" square up ruler (if you’re doing 6” finished blocks, substitute a 2 ½” fussy cut or square up ruler for the 4 ½” ruler).
  • The Quilt in a Day® Triangle in a Square rulers or a comparable ruler for creating your Triangle-in-a-Square units
  • Your LUNCH

Please note:
If you do not already have the rulers mentioned, the instructor will have a sample of each available for your classroom use - realize this may require sharing with others.  The rulers mentioned will be used for future blocks in the Forty Fabulous quilt as well.  Also available in the classroom for your use are ironing boards, irons, large cutting mats and rotary cutters.
